Perfume - So it has come to an end...
To me, the end of Perfume was very strange. It didn’t really make me anything due to it being so obscure and strange; all I could focus on was trying to understand what was going on. I feel like it could also have been expanded on more to a certain degree. Grenouille simply gives up at the end, but in the film there is not really much indication as to why he rather gives up and ‘kills himself’ instead of using his ultimate creation for his own benefit.
The ending summarises the events of the story because much like the rest of the story, it is very unique and the events that take place are very obscure. The ending also shows the power that smell has on people since that is one of the most emphasized topics in the novel/film.
Personally I found the book to be better because I felt like it provided more details and description. The end of the film was too hectic for me because everything happens very quickly in succession, which may serve as a more interesting way to present the story, but for me it felt too rushed. This may however be exactly why the film ending was made fast, because it shows that the perfume Grenouille created holds a lot of power and causes everything to happen very quickly.
As I stated before, the fast fast pace of the film at the end displays exactly how much control and power the perfume really has.The film also allows the viewer to see exactly what the scenery is as well as the facial expressions of key characters like the pope and the executioner.
